Muhammad Shah Bahmani

Muhammad Shah Bahmani
(?-1375)
The second ruler of the Bahmani dynasty who succeeded to the throne in 1358. Within two years, he was recognized by the Abbasid caliph as a sultan in his own right. Muhammad Shah's whole reign (1358-1375) was taken up with a continuous war with Vijayanagar over the territory of Telin-gana. In one of these campaigns, he routed the Vijayanagar army de-cisively, forcing Bukka Raya I (1356-1377) to agree to terms dic-tated by him. At the end of this war, Muhammad Shah declared that in the future noncombatants and prisoners of war shall not be mo-lested. One of his noteworthy achievements was the reorganization of the Bahmani state, providing for its division into provinces (tarafs), each one of which was placed under a viceroy (malik na'ib).
